Career Killing Mistakes and How To Avoid Them
1. Don't waste your time and money chasing rainbows: 1% of the model/talent agencies book 99% of the jobs and there are thousands of model/talent agencies out there that are a complete waste of time and effort. (Don't worry though, we we know who the top 1% are and we can show you the fastest way to get their attention.)
2. Don't rush into signing exclusively with just one agency: The Florida market is inherently different than New York and Los Angeles in that no one agency in Florida has enough bookings to keep all of their models working on a regular basis so you are much better off being multi-listed in Florida as well as all other states.
3. Don't listen to negative people, stay off of the kids modeling forums and do not listen to 'advice' from other parents - your competition - that you meet on castings, bookings etc: The world is full of jealous and negative people that have no idea what they are talking about and don’t want to see you or anyone else succeed so don't listen to them.
4. Don't even think about about joining one of those 'secret' modeling groups where child model parents go to bash other parents, models, photographers, casting directors, agents, personal managers, clients, etc. unless you are okay with the fact that everything you say will immediately be cut and pasted into an email and sent to the person you just got done bashing by your competition.
5. Show up: If you fail to show up a couple times without a very good reason, it could be over with that agency and/or that client as you might not be given another chance.
6. Be on time: Nothing says, 'I don't care,' like being late. So why give agents, casting directors and producers the impression that you think your time is more valuable than theirs?
7. Don't bring friends, relatives or pets to castings or bookings. Only ONE parent should accompany children to auditions, castings, bookings, etc. Imagine the chaos that would ensue if a client is expecting 50 kids and 50 parents (100 people total) and 300 people show up because everyone brought extra family members or friends. Imagine what would happen if you worked at a bank and you brought a friend or a family member to work with you. You would either be sent home or fired, right? It's no different with castings or modeling jobs.
8. Don't complain about real world working conditions. Smart parents keep a low profile and do not complain about real world working conditions. (Do not complain if you don't get a big dressing room, or if you have to wait or if lunch is not provided, etc.)
9. Don't argue, especially with people that are trying to help you. If you don't like something (these rules, for example) do not argue or try to debate them with your agent, manager, a casting director, a client or anyone else.
10. Don't be rude to anyone - ever - especially to assistants, make-up artists, photographers, scouts, agents, casting directors, crew members, etc. as whatever you say and do will be telegraphed up the line and you will very quickly find yourself on the outside looking in.
11. Don't be demanding. Don’t expect to walk into any interview, photo shoot or job situation with a laundry list of demands that everyone must follow as if you are doing them a favor just by showing up. It is much more likely that they are doing you a favor, especially in the beginning stages, so act accordingly.
12. Don't scrimp or cut too many corners when it comes to photos and comp cards. If you go on castings with outdated and/or unprofessional looking amateur photographs, that as how you will be perceived. Why show photos that will do you more harm than good? Why spend several times more money on gasoline to go on castings with than you would have spent on good photos? Why waste your time? Why lose $500 to $1000 a day bookings because your portfolio photos and comp cards are weak and/or outdated?
13. Never underestimate the importance of having a pleasant and cooperative attitude. Imagine that 100 models have been submitted for a big booking. Now imagine that the client has narrowed it down to 10 people and ANY ONE OF THOSE 10 MODELS would fit the role. What then will be the final deciding factor? Who's the tallest? Who's the cutest? NO. Nine times out of ten the determining factor will be: Who is going to be the most pleasant and cooperative person to work with?
DO’s FOR PARENTS
DO carefully note audition places, times, what to wear, etc. in your appointment book. Clothing should always be neat, clean and casual.)
Do have your modeling portfolio book, comp cards and agency vouchers with you at all times and DO bring them to each and every audition. Keep a few of each in your car at all times so you can't possibly forget them.
DO plan on arriving ahead of schedule. Map out your route and be sure to allow enough time for travel, traffic and parking.
DO be on time. Call your agent (or manager if you have one) if you are running late or if there is an emergency.
DO remember to sign in when you arrive on a casting. If you do not see a sign-in sheet, ask for one.
DO teach your child to relax and behave in a calm, quiet and professional manner.
DONT’S FOR PARENTS
DO NOT leave home without audition or booking information and directions to where you are going.
DO NOT go overboard with hair, make-up, etc. Your child needs to look fresh, young and natural unless otherwise requested.
DO NOT be late as this can cost you jobs and get you dropped from your agency.
DO NOT bring cameras of any kind and DO NOT try to take pictures on the set.
DO NOT attempt to contact clients directly. All questions should be brought to the attention of your manager (if you have one) or your agent.
