One-Click 'retouching' is a career killing mistake
"The secret to becoming a supermodel? Always be nice to your photo retoucher." - Heidi Klum
"Models are expected to look flawless in all of their pictures. We are all human, we all get blemishes and we all have flaws. Fashion, however, is about fantasy and perfection. All of your pictures need to look flawless as all top models and all magazines retouch, so do what the professionals do. A flawless picture is worth its weight in gold." - The Model and Talent Bible
Fixes include imperfections and blemish removal, skin smoothing, teeth whitening, braces removal, adding to and/or correcting makeup, slimming and reshaping of the face and body, removal of distracting background objects, dodging and burning, brightness and color correction and it must be done in such a way that it would be impossible to tell that anything at all was done.
Don’t fall for ‘everything included’ offers, however. as the vast majority of such offers are misleading and/or fraudulent and working with anyone amateur enough or desperate enough to make such an offer will turn out to be the biggest, most expensive mistake you will ever make as their work will be sub-par and the photos you get from them will do you more harm than good.
Or, as happens quite often, after weeks or months of waiting you never receive anything from them at all. Hard to believe? It isn’t unusual for people that fall for too good to be true offers to end up receiving nothing at all and as if that isn’t bad enough:
• If you do get photographic prints from them they would very likely be printed on some $99 printer that came with a $50 rebate. (Photo printing is an art unto itself and at can't be done by unskilled amateurs on a cheap printer.)
• Retouching is either not included or they will give your images a one minute “touch up” instead of taking an hour or more that it takes to properly process, optimize, reformat and retouch each image. And, quite often, they will advertise “touch-ups” or “edits” are included instead of saying “retouching” is included in order to lead you to believe that very time consuming REAL retouching is included.
• The vast majority are working on small laptops or desktop computers with low resolution screens - not the high resolution color calibrated 27” Retina Display we use - so they wouldn't even be able to see the flaws in your photos let alone professionally process, optimize, reformat and retouch them.
• The automated One-Click 'retouching' software they use creates overly sharpened 'catfish filter' plastic Barbie doll skin and does so much irreversible damage to image files that it renders them unusable.
• ‘One-Click’ retouching software is the same software that produces that sandblasted plastic look that is widely seen in the 'adult' industry so you do not, of course, want that look.
• Agents, casting directors and potential employers despise this look. It makes them wonder what the model is hiding and - because a confused mind says no - you will not get picked up by top agencies and even if you did you're not going to work much, if at all. Professional image processing, optimization, reformatting and retouching takes years of experience and the use of expensive software - Photoshop for example - and there are no shortcuts.
Cut rate photo shoots that include several hours of REAL image processing, optimization, reformatting and retouchingand USABLE digital images and/or photographic prints simply do not exist and if someone is telling you otherwise they are deliberately misleading you and you will end up with amateur looking photographs and comp cards that will destroy any chance you have of working.
So what sense does it make to try to save a few dollars only to end up with unusable photos that will be laughed at and rejected by agents, casting directors and potential employers? What sense does it make to run the risk of them not taking you seriously? IF you’re lucky enough to get in front of one with junk photos. What sense does it make to your waste time by going on castings with amateur looking photos that do more harm than good? What sense does it make to end up missing out on thousands of dollars worth of bookings due to amateur looking photographs and comp cards?
"We did a photo shoot elsewhere thinking we might save a few dollars but it turned out to be a very expensive mistake. The photographer insisted on using a stylist that had no idea what she was doing, the makeup looked like it was put on with a shovel, the clothing choices were all wrong, my daughter looked age 12 instead of age 6, the photographer was using a cheap old camera, the images were all grainy looking and after the shoot we were told we were on our own for retouching. Then every professional retoucher we could find wanted a anywhere from $100 to $200 PER IMAGE for basic retouching, two of them told us that the images were not worth retouching and every agency we showed them to rejected them as low quality, overly styled and too much makeup so now we have to start all over again." - Name withheld by request.
