Agency:A company that represents models, actors and talent in order to find bookings for them. Modeling agencies handle negotiating rates, contracts, payments, etc. and real model/talent agencies will not ask you for money for sign up fees, photo shoots, comp cards, workshops, classes, etc. as this practice is not only highly unethical it is specifically ILLEGAL at least three states including New York, California and Florida and in all other states it fall under the more general category of fraud.
Bio:A condensed written version of an actor or model's training and/or work history.
Bonus:Bonus money can be given when a shoot runs over time, or when a client wants to use the model's photograph(s) for more than what was originally planned or agreed upon.
Buyout:A buyout is usually a flat rate advance payment for the future commercial use of photos or video that you appear in for a specific period of time. For example, you might get a booking for $125 per hour plus a $500 buyout or $250 per hour plus a $5,000 buyout depending on the proposed usage of your image and likeness and for how long a period of time.
Call Back:Sometimes a model will go on an interview or casting for a particular job and the client will ask them, usually through his/her agency, to come back to be seen again. This is known as a 'call back'.
Comp Card:Also known as a composite card or zed card. A comp card is an approximately 8.5 x 5.5 card printed with a a few photos of the model/talent in various poses, settings, outfits and looks (the widest variety possible). Comp cards come in many different styles depending on the agency and type of model or actor.
Direct Booking:A direct booking is NOT when the client (Gap Kids, for example) calls the model to book the model/talent 'direct" without going through an agency. A direct booking is when the model/talent is booked directly off the strength of their photos and/or comp card. (No casting or in person interview necessary.)
Daylight Studio: A photo studio that is illuminated by natural light, usually by way of windows and skylights.
Fitting:The session that takes place before the photo shoot where the clothes to be modeled are fit onto the model. Those in attendance will often be other models, casting directors, stylists, seamstresses and designers.
Freelance Model:A model that is listed with multiple agencies as opposed to one particular agency or a self-promoting model who works without an agent.
Go-See: A model's appointment to see a potential client, usually with no particular job or project in mind. (For example, your agent might say to you, "We would like you to 'go-see' the editor of this designer and/or this magazine".)
Kid Wrangler:Someone that works on the set of editorial, commercial and catalog shoots whose job is to keep kids happy, energetic and smiling for the camera.
Location:Any place, other than in an indoor studio, where a shoot (photography, film or video) takes place. When you are booked to shoot 'on location' it means you are outside the controlled environment of the studio or sound stage and you should prepare accordingly.
Model Photo Release:A legal document provided by the client/photographer and signed by the model or agent. It gives permission to the photographer and/or the client to use photographs taken at a particular sitting for commercial usage.
Photographer Photo Release:A contract signed by the photographer that gives permission to models and/or clients to use the photographs the photographer has created.
Portfolio:Also called 'book'. A portfolio book that contains a collection of a model's best photographs (usually size 8.5"x11") and tear sheets that demonstrate their abilities in front of the camera. (Be sure to get a quality portfolio book with pages that will not wrinkle up and be ruined by direct sunlight and/or by the heat that builds up in your car.)
Portfolio Mill: A place that may or may not be licensed that claims to be a booking agency in order to sell you sub par worthless photos.
Proofsor Proofing: A photographer's term for a collection of smaller versions of photos taken during a test shoot or commercial photo shoot. From the proofs, the photographer, the model and/or the client will then choose which shots they want to enlarge and print.
Resume: Sheet listing an actor's education, experience, and vital statistics. The resume is usually attached to a headshot or a composite card.
Request Casting: Clients will often have one or more agencies submit photos and/or comp cards of a large number of potential child models well in advance of the actual casting. The client will then narrow down the field to a much smaller number of kids that they want to see in person on the day of the actual casting. This is known as a 'request' or 'request casting'.
Tear Sheet:An actual page torn from the magazine the model has appeared in. Models put their tear sheets in their portfolios. Current tear sheets are as important as current photos photos, but do not put a tear sheet in your book that is out dated and/or not flattering to the model.
Test Shoot: When a model and a photographer work together to create new photos, usually for the photographer's and/or model's portfolio.
Usage:Models and photographers get paid different rates based on how, where and how often their photographs may be used. Examples of different mediums or usages include consumer magazines, trade magazines, product packaging, print ads, bus ads, subway ads, billboards, magazine covers, direct mail, magazine editorials, posters, newspapers, catalogs, brochures, point of purchase displays, annual reports, book covers, kiosks, etc. The model or the photographer receives additional fees for each additional usage the client buys. The longer the ad runs and the more markets in which it appears, can up the model's or photographer's compensation. The largest usage is the unlimited time usage, worldwide buyout. That means the client can use the photographs or images anywhere in the world in every possible usage, forever.
Voucher:A voucher is a form that the client signs on the job acknowledging the number of hours the model has worked. The model keeps a copy, the client keeps a copy and the model sends one copy to the agency that booked the job so the agency knows how much to bill the client for that particular booking.
